The Global Institute of Aviation began as part-time classes in June 2000, through the effort of
Mr Lawrence Baafi. The classes were being organized on a one-on-one basis where workers are
taught after work between 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm in the residence of Mr Baafi.
In October 2000, the number of part-time students increased which urged the organizers to
secure a classroom at the Snaps Junior Secondary School in Asylum down Accra.
The Global Institute of Aviation organized classes for courses in the Aviation Industry on a part-
time basis at the Snaps Junior Secondary School until June 2004, when Mr Lawrence Baafi
made a move to make Global Institute of Aviation a full-time private pre-tertiary Institution.
It was formally located at Osu, Naa Otua Plaza, 1st Ringway Estate and moved to Faanofa Road,
Adabraka, adjacent to Iran Clinic. The Institute is currently located at Asylum Down, near the
Global Institute of Aviation (GIA) aims to be a comprehensive and community institution. Our
ambition is to create an institution that is not constrained by present possibilities but has a
grander and more inspirational vision of its future.
The mission of the Global Institute of Aviation (GIA) is to promote participation in higher education
which it regards as a democratic entitlement and to equip its students to make effective
contribution to society and the economy.

The school is staffed with tutors of highest qualification. The Lecturers have been chosen not just
for their technical skills but also for their ability to impart their knowledge to others.
All our Instructors are qualified, experienced, dedicated certified professionals. They all have an
internationally recognized teaching qualification and many also have a post-graduate teaching
qualification in IATA; those who do not hold the IATA/UFTA are currently working towards
this. The majority of our teachers hold Degrees from Recognized Universities and have
experience teaching students in Ghana and abroad. Our most qualified Senior teachers are
also IATA/UFTA trainers.
Mr Baafi Lawrence is a Dynamic, enthusiastic and hardworking gentleman. He had his
secondary education at St. Johns Grammar School, Achimota. With an initial desire to become a
pilot, which he did not pursue, he then enrolled in one of the aviation schools to pursue some

Immediately after graduation, he secured a teaching job at Institute of Export & Shipping
Management where he taught for five (5) years.
He again taught for two (2) years as an Instructor at Career Development Institute, Accra with an
Instructor’s Certification and a part-time lecturer at Regional Maritime Academy now Regional
Maritime University consecutively.
Mr Baafi also worked with R. E. Travel Services as an Assistant Manager for two (2) years.
Realizing his teaching profession he set up the Global Institute of Aviation (GIA), an aviation
institution to train in Travel & Tourism, Airline, Cargo and the Hospitality Industries.
Mr Baafi enrolled in Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) and
pursued a Bachelor Degree in Business Administration.
As an entrepreneur, his greatest desire is to lift the Global Institute of Aviation to the highest esteem
with local and foreign investors in the near future.
Currently, Global Institute of Aviation (GIA) draws about 60% of its students from the Senior
High School, 30% as mature students (aged 25 and above) and the rest from other African
countries. While these are the minimum criteria to enrol at the institute, a number of workers
find their way into the school.
Courses offered at the institute thoroughly prepare our students for the following external
examinations, leading to the award of certificates by the following international profession
1. International Air Transport Association/ United Federation of Travel Agents Association
(IATA/UFTAA) in Canada for Travel and Tourism (Diploma) Courses.
2. International Air Transport Association, International Federation of Freight Forwarders
Association, (IATA/FIATA) in Canada for Cargo (Diploma) Courses.
3. Educational Institute of America Hotel and Lodging Association (EI AH & LA) in the United States of America for Hotel Management (Diploma) Courses.
4. International Air Transport Association (IATA) for Aviation Management Courses. However, the Global Institute of Aviation would award to successful students a local certificate authenticating the practical training offered to them.
The campus hosts air-conditioned faculty and administrative blocks and state-of-the-art lecture
halls. The Campus is working on residential accommodation for academic and administrative
staff, as well as students in the nearest future.
At GIA we offer high-quality opportunities and activities outside the main curriculum. These
activities are an important and exciting feature of school life and contribute enormously to our
students’ social and academic development. We believe our students should experience success
in as many aspects of school life as possible, and extra-curricular activities are one avenue to
